Chapter Twenty

We head into the kitchen. I take Oscar out of Evan’s arms and place him back down outside. With the gate now closed, he’ll be safe enough to roam out there in the garden. ‘Go on, little man, have some fun.’ I watch for a second as he races off. Satisfied that Oscar seems happy enough chasing butterflies, I close the door.

I move past Evan and pull out one of the chairs. Then I order him to sit.

His eyebrows rise up to his hairline. ‘Are you bossing me about?’ he asks, clearly surprised.

‘Are you not doing what I ask?’ I reply, sternly.

Holding up his hands in defeat, he does as he’s told and sits. ‘I’m not used to taking orders… I quite like it, I think.’

Luckily, because my head is buried in the fridge looking at all the overstocked goodies, Evan can’t see the massive smirk spread across my face right now. I’m content with the fact that he’s happy for me to turn the tables on him for a change. However, I still feel his gaze on me as I move about the kitchen, watching my every move. Either he’s wary of me taking the lead or he’s keeping an eye out ready in case I suddenly decide to bolt for the front door.

My plan of attack starts with surveying our supplies. That woman, I think he said her name was Martha, she must really like taking care of him as the fridge is packed with a wide variety of food. ‘Christ, she certainly makes sure you don’t go hungry,’ I say, with my head still submerged, inspecting the fridge’s contents.

‘What are you up to?’ I hear him ask. I choose to ignore him.

Happy with my choice of olives, parma ham, and brie, I close the fridge door and begin searching for where the plates are kept.

‘If you’d tell me what you’re doing, I could help.’ He shrugs with studied nonchalance.

‘Nice try, sunshine, but I’m doing just fine thanks,’ I reply.

Successfully locating a plate, I grab a knife from the block near the cooker. Once I’ve cut up enough chunks of brie and sliced the ham into strips I wrap the cheese inside the ham to form small parcels. I add the olives to the plate and take half a baguette from the bread bin. I break the baguette in two and add it to the plate.

Having placed the food on the table, I take Evan by surprise and straddle him.

‘What are you up to, hmm?’ From his tone I can tell he’s pleasantly amused by my actions. He rests his hands on my hips, sitting back with a crooked grin on his face.

‘Finding the way to your heart.’ I smile before taking a piece of the wrapped cheese in hand. Capturing his unwavering gaze with a playful look of my own, I hold the parcel to his mouth and, without words, I urge him to open wide.

He raises his hand to accept the offering but I immediately slap it away.
