Chapter 15

Love Forever

The party was the best thing Sage could have asked for. It didn’t happen right away because there was so much to tend to in Centerfeld and so much to prepare to make any celebration worthwhile, but it was the anticipation of it that brightened everyone’s mood. Damian’s happiness was in designing costumes for hours in the meeting room and shopping at Centerfeld’s biggest fashion stores. His rebels had plenty of time to recover from Franco’s show, and the rest of the town accepted that better days were ahead under a new leadership. The transition was amazingly painless, and it still surprised Sage, who had expected tons more resistance and doubt from the people. No one was putting up any fights. That’s what Gertrude and the other rebels, who came out to visit Sage on a daily basis, confirmed. L had not made an appearance since.

“Things are definitely looking up,” Gertrude said. She, Mega Woman, Turtle, Rockstar, Eye Candy, Butcher, Sailor, and Clara were sitting at the table waiting for breakfast. Sage was making pancakes today. It was nice to see that Turtle had all his fingers back and that the rest of the rebels were in one piece.

According to them, the doctors in Centerfeld were extraordinary. They could mend any wound, reattach limbs, regenerate nerve cells, and bring anyone back from the brink of death. They even had stasis pods with actual people inside, a chosen few who’d be waking up many years in the future. Sage didn’t know much of the details, but Franco and Lex had coordinated all of this. In addition to putting on shows, they had chosen who lives, dies, and sees the future.

Sage wasn’t surprised. She supposed they were a lot like Allseer Marchello. The only difference was this was a relatively small town where word spread like wildfire. In Diamond City, news never left the capital unless the Allseer willed it, and he had the eyes and ears to ensure there were no slip-ups.

All this political talk made Sage grateful she wasn’t a part of it. So long as the right people were in charge, the rebels were happy. Preacher was sucked up in some sermon despite how scarce piety was nowadays, doing what he loved. Apparently, there were plenty of people in Centerfeld who wanted to listen to him. Damian was still sketching away with the cocoons in his own little world, hidden from anybody that came to visit the Mistress. It was crazy to think he wasn’t more involved in Centerfeld’s leadership. Perhaps he didn’t care for politics much, either, so long as everything was running smoothly.

“L and Sonia have become the new leaders,” Turtle remarked. He sipped some coffee. “Although Sword Devil looks like a pretty tough chick.”

Rockstar chuckled and patted his buddy on the back. Everyone knew that Turtle had screwed up with Gertrude, and this was his chance to make amends.

“I’m appreciating her skills!” Turtle snapped. “Goddamn, can’t make a comment here.”

“We all know you’re salivating after this chick,” Eye Candy said.
