I saw my opportunity and I seized it.

Rolling from where I had been pressed down and onto Maximus’s back, I landed heavily on the ground, winding myself. I coughed out a rough breath and gasped for air before dragging myself up to my feet and ran.

Kohl cursed profusely behind me, but I ignored it. He shouted something towards Hunter who was picking off the men behind the rubble one by one. Every shot met its intended mark. I don’t think I will ever be able to unhear the sound of an arrow striking through flesh.

Maximus whined as Kohl tugged him to a halt. I threw a hasty look over my shoulder, and saw Kohl drop from the horse and begin to sprint, bolting towards me.

I ran as fast as I could, my heart pounding, lungs burning. Thinking of the room I shared with Reyna at the House of Amaris, I raised my right hand, and the mist began spiralling ahead of me. I had thought of returning to the Palace, but I knew Kohl would find me, and to be honest… I didn’t particularly want to see Queen Emalda right now either.

Amaris was by far the safest place for me to hide out until I could figure out what to do next.

Nearing the mist, I focused purely on the place I wanted to be transported to. Closing my eyes, I leapt towards it. There was no sound to warn me.

No pounding footsteps that followed in my wake.

A hard male body crashed into me, and I squealed as my feet slipped out from under me and off the soft grass. I could no longer feel the earth beneath my feet, only air whipping furiously across my face as I was knocked sideways and away from the mist that swirled and vanished in the blink of an eye.

A strangled sob escaped me as I watched it disappear.

That was my chance. Quite possibly the only one I would ever have.

I threw my head back, as strong arms encircled me, holding me tightly against a warm, rock-solid chest whilst we tumbled to the ground.

A loud grunt of pain rumbled through my back as I was hauled to the ground, and I realised that my attacker had taken the full impact from the fall. I gasped for breath, the fall stealing it from my very lungs as we crashed, entwined.

I knew who it was before he even spoke.

The scent of cedar and rich spices filling the air around us. Rage pulsed through me as he flipped us over, pinning my arms to the ground above my head. I squirmed and writhed under his hold, but he brought my wrists together, holding them in place with one powerful hand. His grip was like a vice.

The other hand had moved to where my knee had raised, aiming for the sensitive place between his thighs, as I tried to shove him off me. He pinned that down with ease too. I threw my head back into the dirt with an obnoxiously loud sigh.
