CHAPTER TWELVE

From across the room, Sagan had seen Keir enter with the beaming Electra Galaxy on his arm. Some benevolent source had perfectly timed the diva’s exit, and Keir now had his opportunity to start a fight. His plan was evolving perfectly, down to the predictable blow the Ussarian threw.

She’d already ascertained the Ussarian’s name and room number from the pageant registration lists. As she moved through the crowds toward the lobby computer, she saw Datron slip out of the ballroom. Everyone’s attention was on Keir, who was slowly circling the Ussarian warrior.

The Oceanun attacked, and Sagan saw Burl fly backward, into a nearby table. Contestants and women alike screamed and scrambled out of the way. Having left the ballroom proper, Sagan could still see the fisticuffs through the open doors. Her hand made contact with the nearest wall communication panel, punching in the Ussarian room number even as the fight revved up.

A strong, rather unfriendly voice sounded on the other end, and Sagan began her rehearsed speech. She purposely made herself sound rather clueless but breathlessly excited. “Um, are you one of the Ussarians?” she asked.

“I am. And who is this?” the voice asked.

“I’m Miss Aurora Borealis. I got your room number from one of your friends in the bar a couple of days ago. You might want to get down to the main ballroom fast. One of your people is getting the living crap beat out of him by an Oceanun.” There was a momentary silence on the other end of the line. She wasn’t sure everyone in Burl’s group would come, but then she heard a commotion from the other end of the speaker.

“Down in the main ballroom, you say?” the voice demanded.

“That’s right. One of your men did me a huge favor in the bar the other night. I thought I’d return it.”

“We’ll be right down,” the Ussarian replied. The connection went dead and Sagan couldn’t hide her smile. It seemed Burl’s clan would respond exactly as Keir believed.

Following her part of the plan, she quickly punched in a four-digit code from the same lobby computer, connecting to her laptop. Her suite equipment was loaded with the proper video splicing program and ready to go. That data would gently loop into the security system in the Ussarians’ hallway. If all the hotel security guards weren’t occupied with stopping the battle now raging, the ones left to monitor the cameras would see nothing but an empty hallway on the Ussarians’ floor. But that loop would only last for the next fifteen minutes. That was all the time Datron had to search the Ussarian quarters, but first he had to wait for the coast to be clear.

Sagan paused. Everything was proceeding perfectly, but part of this scheme puzzled her. Keir had wanted Datron to start the fight so he could be the one to search Burl’s suite, though it had made more sense for Keir to be the fighter, as he was the one who’d disposed of Burl’s clansmen.
