CHAPTER 21

The sun is shining when I wake the next morning, and I feel surprisingly chipper before I remember the events of last night. I realise I’ve slept all night in my jeans and Troy’s shirt and I give it a sniff. It still smells more like him than me, and not like Camille at all, which is a win.

I get out of bed, squeaky floorboards in every room giving me away, but when I make it to Min’s door she’s fast asleep, snoring loudly. The soft little pink crest of her fringe flutters in time with each deep exhale, like a content galah.

I head to the kitchen and open the fridge. Why do I do this? There’s hardly ever anything in there. I’m not sure if I’m expecting some sort of delicious meal to be magically sitting on the shelf when I open the door, but I do it enough times a day to make it feel as though perhaps I am. There’s milk at least. I sniff it and, convinced I won’t end up like Camille on my bathroom floor, I take it to the kitchen table, along with a box of cereal.

I take off Troy’s shirt and fold it neatly on the back of a chair and consider my options. What to do today.

I hear a buzz on the bench and realise it’s my phone. When I pick it up, there’s twelve unread messages. How is that even possible? I’ve never had that many messages overnight in my life.

Three from Min:

Camille is going to be sore and sorry tomorrow, but she’s going to be ok.

I had to call her parents. I now understand why she didn’t want anyone to.

I’ll be home soon. Go to bed. We will talk tomorrow.

Two from Troy:

I hope everything went ok. Sorry if you got in trouble with your mum. Does she know you were just trying to help?

Let me know if you need me to back you up. How is Camille?

Six from Alfie:

Is Millie all right?

Have you heard anything?

Let me know when you hear something.

I know your mum was mad, but am glad she took care of Millie. Tell her thank you from me.

Eleanor, let me know if Millie is good.

Eleanor?

And one from Namita:

Well. That was ridiculous.

I smile. I can’t wait to talk to her.

I message the group, letting them know that Camille is going to be all right. Then I send a separate message to Alfie, apologising for not letting him know sooner. He responds almost immediately.

Thank you, Eleanor. This is good news.

I hesitate and then send him another message:

Can you send me directions to Troy’s place?

Three little dots appear, then a link to Maps with the address pinned. I knew I could count on Alfie for immediate, helpful intel.

Three dots appear again and I watch with curiosity.

An image. It’s a screenshot of a satellite photo taken from maps, but Alfie has drawn on the image with his phone, making a line from my place to Troy’s. A shortcut.

Three dots blink. Then a list of directions.
