When Zinn eventually regained consciousness, it was a slow and gradual process. Awareness did not return all at once. First to come were impressions of tall trees and dense jungle foliage, a turquoise lagoon and a network of caves.

Then came the sense of ‘I’, the realization that there was a witness to these images. It took a comparatively longer time for her to fully regain her sense of self, to remember who she was and to recall what had happened. The droplets into which she had dissolved after the attack had now coalesced into intangible wisps of vapor that mingled with the air.

But something was terribly wrong.

She was badly injured. Whatever the Patriarch had done to her, it had affected her at a core level. It was difficult for her to formulate thoughts and the continued pain made it even harder to function. She didn’t know what to do, for she’d never experienced such injury before. Normally a speedy return to her natural state remedied any injury accrued while in corporeal form, but not this time.

She couldn’t let the pain stop her, though. She had to find out if Eladria was safe. She had no idea how much time had passed while she’d been unconscious. She tried to resume human form, but found it extremely difficult to do so. It took numerous attempts and a significant degree of pain before she finally managed to force herself into physical form. As her feet touched the ground and she looked down at her hands and body, she noticed that she still looked the same as before, but she was so weak that she could barely stand, much less walk.

Yet she forced herself to move. She hobbled over to the cave and cautiously entered. As she feared, it was empty. She called out, but there was no answer. She slowly and painfully searched the length and breadth of the cave but there was no sign of anyone. She knew they wouldn’t have left without her, not unless they’d been forced to leave against their will. The Patriarch must have overpowered and captured them.

She slumped to the ground, her back resting upon the cave wall and she began to weep. How would she ever find them? She could barely move!

She didn’t know what to do. It still hurt to think, so she had to struggle to gather her thoughts and consider her options. She realized that her own pain mattered little. She had to find Eladria and rescue her. That was all she cared about.

And so she dragged herself up from the ground and made her way out of the cave, holding onto the walls for support as she forced one leg in front of the other. Once outside, it took considerable effort to change shape once more into a bird and with great exertion she took to the air and rose above the treetops. Each movement, each effort to direct her will and control her form hurt immensely, but the force of her love for Eladria enabled her to endure the pain as she began searching for her dear child.
