Atrial Tachycardia is a heart condition where the electrical impulse is generated somewhere in the atrial chambers as opposed to the SA node. In this condition, the SA node has been overridden and is no longer the dominant pacemaker. It is a type of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and does not needs the AV junction, the accessory pathways or even the ventricular tissue to function in terms of initiation and maintenance.
People with structurally abnormal hearts can have this problem but are less likely able to tolerate this type of rhythm abnormality unlike those people with normally structured hearts who have a lower mortality rate despite having this condition. Atrial tachycardia can occur with exercise, alcohol ingestion, hypoxia, metabolic disturbances, drug use, and acute illness.
Common signs and symptoms associated with the Atrial Tachycardia are sudden occurrence of palpitations, a rapid pulse rate, syncope, dizziness, dyspnea, pressure in chest, and even fatigue. Signs of heart failure may also be present as well as the occurrence of a warm-up phenomenon where the heart rate gradually speeds up soon after onset.
How to detect the presence of Atrial Tachycardia in an ECG tracing ?
