CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

It was decided that with the help of a number of uniformed officers they’d pick up Sebastian Mancini and Ethan Cartwright simultaneously. They wouldn’t be arrested; they’d be told they were helping with police enquiries. The decision was made to leave out Herschel Berkowitz for the time being. The idea being that the other two might wonder if their geeky mate had said something to the police, something that was enough to allow him his freedom.

They tried the Cartwrights first, but were met with an empty house. So in the end, only Sebastian and his parents came in.

Harvey started the questioning, but even with his nerves, Sebastian seemed relatively sure of himself.

“Tell us about Zara Redhead. We know you know her.”

Sebastian didn’t seem at all rattled by Wordsworth’s declaration.

“I’m not sure, I may do,” was Sebastian’s reply.

“Either you do or you don’t,” chimed in his mother.

Wordsworth opened a file that he had brought into the room with him and took out a photograph of Zara. He placed it in front of Sebastian.

“That’s Zara Redhead,” said Wordsworth.

Sebastian didn’t hesitate. “Yeah I know her. Her name’s Zara is it?”

“Was,” stated Harvey quietly.

“Was?” Sebastian was either a brilliant actor, or he had no idea about what had happened to her.

“She’s dead,” continued Harvey. “Bad drugs.”

“Dead …?” There was genuine shock in Sebastian’s voice.

“Yeah. Did you know she did drugs?” asked Harvey.

“No … I only met her the once.”

“Was she by herself?” Wordsworth joined in.

“Yeah.”

“There wasn’t a boy with her?” persisted Wordsworth.

“A boy?”

“Yeah … was she with a boy?”

“Yeah … Ethan. Ethan was with her. That’s how I met her. He knocked around with her for a couple of weeks, but I only saw her the once.”

“Ethan Cartwright?” Wordsworth confirmed.

Sebastian nodded.

“What do you remember about that meeting?”

“I wasn’t supposed to be there. I just hadn’t got his message.”

“Where did you meet them?”

“Nero’s … centre of Bradford. We meet in there a lot. I thought we were going on somewhere, but when I got there Ethan was with … that girl.” He nonchalantly pointed at the photograph.

“Then what happened?”

“She went to the loo and Ethan said he needed me to get lost.”

“He wanted to be by himself with her?” Wordsworth asked.

“Yeah … and I’d better not say anything to Jodie. This girl was his bit on the side …”

“Jodie knew nothing about this girl - Zara?”

“No.”

“And you were ok with keeping it secret?”

“It was no big deal for me. It wasn’t the first time Ethan two timed his girlfriend.”

“He did it regularly?”

“Now and then. Hey, you’re not going to say anything are you? ‘Cos if you are then …” Sebastian couldn’t finish the sentence because if they had have told Ethan, he wasn’t sure what he’d do.

“No … this is between you and us …” Harvey said reassuringly.

“We might …” Wordsworth stared at Sebastian coldly.

Sebastian looked at him shocked, as did Harvey.

Sebastian’s parents were also taken aback by Wordsworth’s veiled threat. Danielle was about to say something, but her husband just squeezed her hand. Giovanni had realised the boy they were after was Ethan, not Sebastian.
