Thomas Cantens is an anthropologist who is the head of the research unit at the World Customs Organization in Brussels and associate professor at the University of Auvergne School of Economics. He began his professional career as an engineer, before joining the French Customs Administration where he occupied a number of positions. Prior to joining the WCO’s Research Unit in 2010, he served as a resident advisor in the Mali and Cameroon services for six years. He is the author of numerous publications on the use of quantification in public services, and on corruption and the linkages between security, trade and taxation in fragile areas. He has a degree in engineering, a Master’s in Philosophy and a PhD in Social Anthropology and Ethnology from Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris).
