6 The life table technique is used to calculate the proportions of the marriage cohort 1985–89, because some couples would have their household divided from that of the parents within the fifth year of their marriage, which would not have been captured by the sampling survey conducted in 1993 (before the end of the fifth year). The marriage cohorts of the 1990s are not included since there were so few.

7 Buck (1937: 291–2), investigating the percentage of farm work done by different groups in northern China, estimated that circa 1930 men performed 80 per cent of all the farm labour in China; women, 13 per cent; and children, 7 per cent (quoted in Parish & Whyte 1978: 187). Judd, however, suspects that women might have done more work in the period than the data has suggested. See Judd (1990: 199–200).

8 Some scholars, however, have argued that the Chinese Communist Party lacked the will (e.g., Johnson 1983) or the theoretical insight (e.g., Stacey 1983) to push through significant gender reforms. The issue is beyond the scope of the study.
