“You don’t really think Sassy had anything to do with what happened, do you?” Joel asked incredulously when Michel finished talking.

“Personally, no, but professionally I have to consider it a possibility,” Michel replied evenly, using DeRoche’s words.

“So in the meantime you’re willing to treat her like shit just in case?” Joel asked, shaking his head. “Isn’t that sort of like administering punishment before you’ve established guilt?”

“I’m not punishing her,” Michel replied with an angry edge to his voice. “I’m trying to maintain a professional distance. Sassy knows she’s involved in the case. She knows I can’t talk to her about it.”
