I knew the reason Carl wanted to turn me into a Tiefling-shaped ash statue, and I also knew that in a one-on-one fight I’d come out crispier than good fried chicken, but that didn’t mean I had to stand there and take it lying down.

“Hey, dude, what’s happenin’?” I asked as nonchalantly as I possibly could while staring at an Angel with a reason to kill me.

“You didn’t spawn in on time and the cache was robbed, that’s what’s happening.” Carl snarled.

“Sorry, wasn’t a whole lot I could do about it.”

“You could’ve been here!”

I sucked my teeth at that and nodded, “I could’ve if I hadn’t been filling in for your lazy ass.”

Carl scoffed and turned his attention to Kurt, “Did he seriously just call me lazy?”

“That he did.” Kurt replied, “It’s almost as if he hasn’t seen that you converted a city college into a cathedral.”

“Yeah, no, he did see that,” I said, “but because he was at work all damn day he has no idea how much effort goes into building something like this. Hell, as far as he knows it took you all of five seconds and some magic genie wishes.”

“Why would there be multiple wishes?” Kurt asked, surprising both Carl and me and showing me that he wasn’t actually as invested in scolding me for screwing up as Carl.

“What?” Carl snapped.

“Well, it’s a genie, right? So wouldn’t you only need the one wish?”

“He does have a point, Carl,” I chuckled, “maybe we could focus on that for a few minutes instead of me losing the guns that, oh yeah, I got for us.”

“But you still lost them!” Carl barked, “We had enough weapons to start an army and you lost them!”

“I’ve seen some of the golden dudes and they don’t exactly seem unarmed,” I replied coolly, “don’t get me wrong, I get the appeal of having a prepper stash for when those darn Russians come a-knockin’, but you aren’t doing bad for yourself.”

“See that? That right there?” Carl fake-laughed, “That sort of talk is exactly what I expected from you. You don’t see us as a unit or a guild, you see yourself and the rest of us as separate entities.”

“And why wouldn’t I?” I asked, showing my first hint of emotion since engaging Carl, “You guys are on your own little planet, taking over cities and swearing loyalty to gods, while I’m dropping in at completely different times and trying to play catch-up.”

“Maybe you wouldn’t have to if you were more of a team player.” Kurt suggested with none of the fire Carl had, “Don’t get me wrong, you’ve definitely contributed, but there’s no denying that you don’t have the same values as us.”

“That’s because your values are insanely puritanical,” I groaned, “seriously, guys, look at yourselves. You’ve both gone native, Carl especially, and now you’re acting like I’m the bad guy for not wanting to do the same.”

“We haven’t gone native,” Carl retorted, “we’ve just… We’ve fallen into our roles. We’re protectors, guardians of
