COMORBIDITY

Comorbidity refers to the psychiatric and medical conditions that co-occur with eating disorders. Many, if not most, eating disorder patients have one or more comorbid conditions (Braun, Sunday, & Halmi, 1994; Milos, Spindler, & Schnyder, 2004). The most common conditions co-occurring with an eating disorder are mood disorders (major depressive, dysthymic, and bipolar disorders), anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive, and posttraumatic stress disorders), substance use disorders, and personality disorders (Yager, 2007a). These comorbid conditions can either be risk factors for the development of an eating disorder or can exacerbate an existing disorder. Additionally, they can greatly affect the course of treatment for an eating disorder patient. Some comorbid conditions can be (semi)starvation effects, and some may remit with successful treatment. Depending on their severity and relation to the eating disorder, some comorbid conditions can be treated concomitantly with the eating disorder, whereas others may need to be treated prior to or following eating disorder treatment. For more information on such conditions and recommended treatment modifications, see Sansone and Sansone (2007). For how these comorbid conditions might specifically affect sport participants, the reader is directed to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA; 2007).
