Chapter 12

EASY

Despite the interrupted sleep last night, I’m feeling surprisingly energized. I’m sure I’ll crash as soon as my head hits the pillow tonight, but in the meantime, I shoot Lux a text before he gets home from the shop.

EASY: Moon’s full, sky’s clear, waves are high…

LUX: Just counting out the cash drawer. Load up our boards and come get me?

I grin and send back a thumbs-up. My pulse is already thrumming with the promise of my favorite kind of adrenaline rush. While I tie my hair up out of my face and grab our wetsuits, I consider calling Ten and Trick to invite them out. Any other night, I wouldn’t even hesitate, but with the way things have shifted and changed between Lux and me over the past few days, I think I need this night with just him.

Surfing has been our thing almost since we could walk. There weren’t exactly a lot of waves in Colorado when we were growing up, but every summer, our dads would take a few weeks off work together and take us on a road trip to California. We learned to surf tandem and got our own boards the same Christmas when we were seven. Even after Lux’s parents split and our dads had a falling out, mine kept up the tradition, taking the two of us out to Huntington Beach every summer. The rest of the year, we’d make do with snowboarding to scratch the itch, but neither of us loved the snow as much as we loved the sand and the sea.

I slip into my summer wetsuit, which leaves my arms exposed and stops mid-thigh. I toss Lux’s over my shoulder too, then I grab our boards, carrying them outside and strapping them to the back of the golf cart. My skin prickles with anticipation as I hop into the driver’s seat and crank the battery powered engine to life. She may not be speedy, but she does her best, whining with exertion as I press the pedal all the way to the floor. I drum my fingers on the steering wheel, keeping time with the undefined song inside my head. The rush of the waves gets louder the closer I get, beckoning me like a siren song.

I pass hordes of tourists on their way to whichever bar or party they’re planning to let loose at tonight. A few weeks ago, I might have found myself scoping them out, looking for the hottest one or the one who looks like the most fun. I’d follow them to their destination, flirt all night, then get lost in a haze of hedonistic pleasure. Nothing wrong with indulging the flesh. Hell, it’s been my favorite pastime for most of my life.

That empty spot in my chest aches around the edges at the thought, making me want to gasp for breath, even though my lungs are working just fine.

What the fuck am I going to do if this thing runs its course, and we end up right back where we were? Obviously, I’ll accept it.
