Chapter fifteen
Between Life and Death
Only a few days had passed since Sola had returned from the visit to her family, and she woke up tired and conflicted. All night, her dreams had been a jumble. Part of her thought she should hold to her oath, despite what sheâd seen in Aslo. After all, Willâs still alive. And thatâs what was promised, wasnât it? A house in town, and money, and that Willâs life would be saved.
But another part of her remembered Torâs fear, and Willâs weakness, and her fatherâs eerie silence. And that part was not satisfied.
But perhaps, once I meet the prince, I can work things out, she thought, for the hundredth time. And, immediately, Coward. You just donât want to rock the boat.
But why? Why donât I?
Because, Sola thought with a sudden chill, Iâm starting to see the dark side of magic. Of wishes granted, but not at all the way they were supposed to go, just like in the tales. And now Iâm in a tale. The stakes for me are even higher. Higher than mother and fatherâs or the boysâ, as long as they stay out of it.
I have to keep them out of it. I need to look for a way to free Diamond. Her resolve firmed.
But it seemed risky to do it if Kavar was in the castle. She rang the bell and asked to be brought to the bear, but no wind responded.
So heâs gone again. Good. It means I can search without worrying that Iâll come upon him somewhere.
Sola finished breakfast quickly, and then wished to go to the room that looked out into empty air. She walked to the edge, balancing on the broken stones.
âDiamond,â she called.
But instead, the blowing snow brought a sing-song voice into Solaâs ear. It tickled. âWhy are you here? What are you looking for? Your hair is like a candle. But I cannot blow it out!â
A warm, soft breeze swirled around her, but Sola could see no one. âWho are you?â she asked. âAre you another wind?â
âYes, Euru! East, spring and early summer, cloud and rain and grow. I am very fast, faster than any of the others. I could carry you!â
Her hair swirled into soft tangles, and she reached up to pull it gently away from mischievous wind-fingers. This one sounds younger than Diamond.
As if winds have an age, she thought. âEuru, do you want to help me today?â
âFirst tell Euru why, why, why,â sang the wind. âSecrets fly like time does not, in the Winter Palace.â
Sola hesitated, but the wind only waited, humming and curling her hair into spirals. âWellâ¦I have a notion to help you winds. Itâsâ¦itâs not right that the prince holds you here! There must be some way to free you. I am looking to find it.â
The wind turned from soft to shriek in an instant. There was a sense of another form, glimpsed for an instant before it rushed away. Sola wobbled on the precipice, but a warm grip pushed her back, away from the edge.
