CHAPTER FIVE

Rock Watching

It was just warm enough to eat breakfast at the picnic table on the back porch. Sam and Polly sat on a bench with the rock between them.

Audrey seemed to have forgotten her fear of the rock. Instead, she chattered on about how it had moved and how she had screamed for help at just the right moment.

Polly didn’t try to stop Audrey from talking, because she knew that their grandparents would think that Audrey was only making things up—making things up in a good way, not in a lying way. Polly was right.

“Isn’t imagination a wonderful thing?” Grandma asked Grandpa.

“Wonderful,” said Grandpa. “And there’s something about that funny rock that makes it work overtime.”

Sam leaned over to Polly. “Maybe we should ask about the second calling thing,” he said softly. “You know. The one about the seed.”

Polly nodded. “Um, Grandma,” she began, “what’s that saying about giant trees growing from little seeds?”

“You mean, ‘Giant oaks from tiny acorns grow’?” Grandma asked.

“Yeah,” said Polly. “That’s it.”

“What about it?” asked Grandma.

“Oh,” said Polly, “Sam and I were just talking about it, and we couldn’t remember it exactly.”

“Are there any oak trees around here?” asked Sam, casually looking down at his eggs.

“A few,” said Grandpa.

“And acorns,” said Polly. “Where could we get one?”

“I don’t know about that,” said Grandma. “You usually find them in the spring.”

“I’ve got some,” said Grandpa. “I always have a few around on my dresser or in my desk drawers.”

“Can we have one?” asked Sam.

“Sure,” said Grandpa.

Sam and Polly leaped to their feet.

“After breakfast,” said Grandma.

They sat back down. As they did, they felt the rock shift. Sam and Polly each gave a little jump.

“What’s wrong?” asked Grandpa. “The rock give you a pinch?”

“Sam must have pushed it,” said Polly.

“No, I didn’t,” said Sam. “You must have nudged it.”

“Or it moved on its own,” said Grandma, putting homemade jam on a piece of toast.

“It moved again,” said Audrey. She began chanting, “The rock moved. The rock moved …”

Sam and Polly looked at each other. It was going to be a very long day.
