âThe Awful World Warâ
Ambrose Jessup Tomlinson
1917
The awful war devil is still slaying his millions. His greed and thirst for blood is never satisfied. He is agitating war on every hand. He is dragging millions of souls into his cruel grasp. Yea, he is slaying the young men in early life and breaking the hearts of millions of mothers and young wives.
Fond hopes of millions could have been blasted, and it seems that those in authority who could have some control, care for none of these things. They seem to value human life as nothing. Of course there is little thought about the souls and eternity.
Our country has kept out of the awful conflict so far. No doubt thousands of prayers have been underneath president Wilson and others in authority according to Paulâs instructions: âI exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truthâ (1 Tim. 2:1â4).
I admit that Jesus tells us that we will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but this is nothing new in the history of the world. Wars have checkered the history of the world in all ages. Different peoples have struggled for the mastery over others. All such result in bloodshed and the loss of human life. And what a waste of the lives of precious young men! And most of them probably died with no hope whatever in a Savior.
War is a feeder of hell. It increases the population of that dark region rapidly. This last awful struggle has been the cause of millions of motherâs boys dropping into the region of the damned where they are entering their eternal tortures. Their fate is awful. And snatched away from life so suddenly by satanâs belching cannons and the devilâs war artillery, they had no time to repent.
With all the horrors of war vividly pictured before the people, and the shrieks and groans of the damned rightly imagined according to the teaching of the Bible, who favors war? Who would want to force a crowd of innocent young men into the face of death as he belches forth his hellish fury to hurl our young men off the battlefield into the fiery recesses of hell?
While Jesus said that there would be wars, there is no statement nor inference whatever that shows He endorsed or favored war. His teaching is altogether to the contrary. Better suffer wrong than to do wrong, is the spirit of Christ. At one time He said, âIf my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fightâ (John 18:36). But as His kingdom is not of this world He
