Afterlife of the Formulae

The focus of this article has been to introduce Eucherius as someone whose contribution to the development of Latin theology has been overlooked and who should be more fully studied. But this question turns on just how great an impact he had on the Latin tradition. Answering this presents two difficulties. First, the question’s size—it would have to look at almost every theological writer before the thirteenth century and in most of the great MS repositories, even before one looked at the impact of his ideas—it would require many years’ work and a booklength monograph. Second, despite the confident tone of many histories of Latin theology, since so much of the material for the period between Eucherius and the twelfth century still lies unedited, or in inadequate editions, any judgement of his impact is at best provisional. What follows is really no more than notes.
