Even though glass is transparent, what we see through it is often very dark. This value study helped me remember that as I moved into the color painting.

The thumbnail sketch on the previous page, done quickly in a combination of pencil and Sharpie, helped me check in with my “sweet spots,” ensuring that my intended focal point—the top lemon in the bowl—was well positioned.

Next, the value study in oils helped me see that some of my darkest darks were actually in the lemons—which was counterintuitive since my brain always wants to see yellow as light! It also helped me decide which highlight to make the brightest and to leave the highlight on the lemon on the plate off altogether.
