Chapter Ten
âIâm afraid I cannot accept another quest immediately,â I quickly explained. âItâs the middle of the night, and I do still have other, ahh⦠Obligations.â
âYes, Iâm sure the settlement of Brooklyn has much need of you also.â The Baron sniffed haughtily. âBut Iâll be paying you handsomely for your help.â
âYour generosity precedes you, sire.â I bent my back in a grateful half-bow like Iâd seen the messenger perform. âIf youâd be so kind as to permit me a day to prepare, Iâd be glad to take up your mission.â
From my experience at the tavern, I guessed gold was hard to get for common folk of this world, so I wanted to get as much as possible out of the Baron.
âOne day, Sir Miller,â the Baron allowed with another comical sniff through his large crooked nose. âYou are to find my quartermaster now, though. He has some supplies and information for you.â
âGreat.â I nodded sincerely. âI shall then retire to my cabin to prepare and set off on my quest once Iâve done so. Thank you again for your generosity.â
I bowed again as the Baron waved his hand with another unnecessary flourish by way of a dismissal, and I hurriedly backed out of the throne room.
So, now youâve been prophesied? Amber asked with a chuckle once Iâd made it back out of the Baronâs throne room. See, I knew you were special right from the beginning.
âThatâs a damn lie, you had to talk me step by step through killing that river troll,â I reminded her with a laugh of my own as I retraced the messengerâs route back up into the hills above Hadden.
You did great, master, Amber said.
âI mean, in my defense, Iâd hopped from one world to the other and found myself somewhere that fucking trolls and magic existed,â I replied with a pout. âAnyone I know wouldâve gone into shock.â
Lucky you had me to calm you down then, isnât it? Amber said, and I could hear the smug smile that saturated her sweet voice.
âSure,â I chuckled. âDâyou have any idea where we might find the quartermaster?â
No clue, Amber sighed. Iâve never even set foot in a castle, at least in this form, and this doesnât count, Iâm in your head.
âOne day you will,â I promised her.
I know, Amber said. I know youâll keep your promise to me.
âIâm hoping that by doing all these missions and getting all this gold, I can pawn most of it off back home, but⦠Iâll do whatever I can in this world to end your curse, okay?â
I know, I trust you, Amber replied softly. Thank you, James.
âThatâs Sir Miller,â I corrected her, and I smiled when I heard her laugh inside my mind.
By the time Iâd walked a ways down the main corridor of the castle, I thankfully bumped into a night guard before Iâd gotten to the massive front doors, and I enquired with him where I might find the quartermaster.
The guard explained how the quartermaster resided on the lower floors
