Chapter Ten

“The company is called ‘Obsidian’?” Sid asked with the first spark of hope in her round eyes.

“It sounds like far too much of a coincidence,” I replied as I tried to keep my eagerness in check. “But this guy ticks all the boxes. He’s old enough to be related to you in some way, he has the exact name that Maggie mentioned, he’s called his company by your name… I definitely think we should go and check him out.”

“I agree,” Amber said with an excited clap of her hands. “Who do you think he is? Brother? Or your father, maybe?”

“I… I honestly don’t know,” Sid said in a quiet voice. “I never gave much thought to having… A family. From what I can remember of my time working in the Baron’s castle, I thought I was an orphan. It hurt too much to daydream about anything more. But if what Maggie says is true, and this man, this… Harper, if he’s connected to me in some way then, well, I’d like to say hello to him, at least.”

I pulled myself to my feet, took Sid’s hands as I helped her stand, and wrapped her up in a tight embrace. She instantly sighed into me and rested her head on my chest while her own arms wound themselves around my waist, and I kissed the top of her head as she snuggled against me.

“Whatever happens, we’ll be right there with you,” I assured her.

“If you don’t want to go… We don’t have to,” Amber said in a much more subdued voice as she joined us and put a gentle hand on Sid’s shoulder.

“No, we need to,” Sid said determinedly, though her words were muffled slightly since she was still smushed against one of my pectorals.

“We do kinda need to,” I agreed with a huff of laughter, and I gave Sid another firm squeeze. “He’s our only lead so far, but I’m hoping this guy can actually give us some answers.”

I only had the one class the following day, and it was already getting real late in the day, so the three of us finished our beers and headed for bed. I slept deeply but was interrupted by increasingly realistic dreams of river trolls, witches, soothsayers, and mages. I had to constantly defeat them no matter how many waves came for me. It was like a never-ending boss level.

When I woke up late the next morning, both Sid and Amber were curled against me on either side, and so I stared up the ceiling with sleepy eyes and a mind that was already running wild.

I was excited to take the girls into the city, not just because it was Manhattan and therefore probably an even crazier experience for them, but because I was keen to hopefully get some real answers to the conundrum that had faced me since my first day of college.
