CHAPTER ELEVEN
Eradication
Leath stepped in front of me. âAre you sure about this? I can put together a squad of my best men. Thereâs no telling whatâs down there. You shouldnât risk yourself needlessly.â
âComing from you, thatâs ironic, old friend. Believe me, I am well prepared. You could even say this is a test run. Iâve faced these creatures before, remember?â
âAt least let me go with you. We make a good team.â He seemed almost desperate.
Grasping his shoulder, I smiled. âWe do, indeed. Donât worry, I will return shortly. I have a feeling this will be a minor expedition.â
âWhatever lurks down there wiped out a village overnight. Itâs not going to be a den of bunnies.â
âNo, I expect it wonât be. Secure the perimeter. Donât send anyone inside. I wonât be able to guarantee their lives.â
âThis is madness, Jagen! A king doesnât risk himself against the unknown. Youâre too valuable to the nation!â
âIf Iâm to face what lies ahead, I must become stronger. Combat and conquering our enemies accomplishes that. Iâm no normal king,â I said as I stepped over the edge of the crater, sliding down the bank as if it were a snowy hill. I came to rest just above the hole.
âGrab a pint and find some shade,â I shouted as I jumped into the hole.
Before Iâd landed, the first two rushed me. Slamming my shield into the first, I was surprised by the impact. The alien bug warrior crashed into the wall, his green innards decorating the surface. Purgatory jabbed into the second oneâs carapace, sliding easily through and emerging from its back. Still it came, its barbed legs reaching for me.
I lifted up on the sword, intending to wrench it free, but it slid up through the creatureâs body, splitting it in half from its torso to its skull. Its death shriek echoed down the dark tunnels.
âIs everything all right?â Leath called down from the blinding circle of light above. Staring at the sword and the two easily dispatched creatures, I answered, âEverything is...fine.â
Were these creatures somehow different from the first ones weâd encountered? They seemed fragile...slow. Whipping Purgatory back and forth to clean the foul ichor from it, the blade sang a metallic song as it cut through the wind. I quickly halted a swing midway, causing the blade to wobble from the force. No, Iâd grown even stronger since Iâd last encountered the creatures.
Conquering the Ironpit dungeon and subjugating Yaug, killing the rogue on the road...they were adding to my already immense strength and magical power. This was one of the reasons Iâd wanted to handle this mission myself, without the help of the Royal Guard or Leath.
The shrieks of more creatures sounded in the distance, echoing throughout the tunnels. Summoning several orbs of light, I retrieved a summoning disk, tossed it to the ground, and invoked the name of its warrior. âSetha, come forth.â A flash of yellow light erupted from the magical device, leaving the felae warrior hunched over on the tunnel floor.
She yawned and stretched, revealing her long, feline teeth.
