Chaper Nine

Deandre

It was always pretty cool to have your family in the barn.

It was even cooler to have the man who had been starring in your dreams sitting with your loved ones. I gave Mama and my brother a smile, then I waved at Cliff, and then my sight fell on Gabe all hunkered down in his seat, spooning chili into his mouth. His cheeks were red and his brow sweaty. The Hot Spot Chili Court on the main thoroughfare did make some damn hot chili. Poor man looked to be in hot pepper hell.

“Hey.” I yanked my sight from Gabe to find Fossie at my side, the others skating around shooting pucks lazily at Liam, who was in goal tonight. “Is that your mother?”

“Yeah,” I replied with a grin. “And my brother and Cliff and Pastor Gabe,” I told him.

Bean skated up, pausing to nod at my mother and the minister before his sight flew to me. “Did you introduce Pastor Gabe to your mother?”

I stared at my team captain in confusion. He sounded shocked. “Yeah, well, sort of, yeah. I got a small block of tickets and—”

“Whoa, hey, did I hear right?” Greck showed up, skidding to a stop, ice flying, as he wiggled in front of Fossie and Bean. His sharp eyes flew to the seats behind the bench. “Oh holy shit, you did! I didn’t know it was that serious. Congrats, man.”

Greck slapped me on the arm and skated off to go talk to Liam in net. Our goalie took a shot to the mask, his attention riveted to me.

“Uhm, what the hell, guys?” I asked around my mouth guard. “They’re sitting together is all. I’m not sure what you’re all looking so dumb about.”

“They always look that way,” Basky interjected, easing out onto the ice to stretch and warmup a bit just in case he was called in. “Dumb.”

Bean jerked his head at the ice. Baskoro snickered as he went out to limber up as goalies do, bending into pretzel shapes that no human could possibly bend into, leading credence to the rumor that goalies were, in fact, aliens.

“Ignore him. He whispers to his socks before every game,” Bean said, taking a moment to pretend to be picking at his tape. “We’re not saying anything bad, just pointing out that you introducing Pastor Gabe and his boy to your family is a big step.”

Carson moved off, his attention now on talking to the refs to make nice with them. Captains liked to do such things before games, just to be captain-y.

I stared at Mama, who was beaming at me, then at Lionel, who was eating…was that one of my mother’s muffins?! Did she bribe one of the security guards with her baked goods again? Probably Montgomery at the players’ entrance. He was a sucker for my mother’s muffins. My brother looked smug, never a good sign.

“He’s right. Now your mother and Gabe will think this is like the big meet the family date.” Fossie clapped me on the shoulder.
