AND BEYOND

Dojo - Abandoned City

I don’t believe that I had ever worked so hard in my life. Not all the hiking or working in the concentration camp, Jacob had said to call things as they were not as ‘They’ would have us believe, or any work on the farm had been as hard as this. Almost none of it had anything to do with the physical. I felt like my mind had been through a cheese grater and then reassembled just to be put through a blender.

Ray had taken to the physical training like a duck to water. He didn’t care at all about the mental discipline that Jacob was teaching me. Jacob never let up though, he had to be as tired as I was, but he wouldn’t stop no matter what. His comment to me was, “If I can do it, you can do it better.”

We only had one other person come by in the entire time we were there. Diane was her name. She was an older woman but as beautiful as she was, telling her age was impossible. Jacob introduced us and I could tell by the way that he treated her, with utmost respect that bordered on reverence, that she was someone very special to him. This was the Diane that Jacob said had been helping him look for me.

The city that we were in was abandoned. Not entirely, just enough that the life had gone out of it. Those that remained were what, in a past life, we would have called the dregs of society. The criminals, misfits, thugs and crazies were all that remained of a once vital and living organism. Jacob told us that he had used to live here, went to high school here. He had once had an aunt that lived here, she had long since passed. When I asked him if he had anyone special left in his life, he laughed.

My training began at sunrise and didn’t end until two or three hours after sunset. We didn’t use clocks for some reason. If I asked him, Jacob could tell me the exact time, but he said it didn’t matter, we weren’t going to be constrained by the clock. Oh, how there were times when I wished we were constrained by the clock!

Since we already knew I had an ability and we knew what it was, the point of the training was to learn how to bring it out when I wanted and use it in a way that I wanted. My Song had been such a wild talent for so long, I wasn’t sure that would ever be possible. Jacob assured me that it was not only possible, but that I would learn to master it much quicker than he did.

I learned to ‘hear’ not only the music, but My Song before I could Sing it. That may sound absurd to you, I’m sure that most, if not all of you, hear the words and music in your heads before you say things, but that wasn’t the way it was with My Song.
