Chapter 16 – Starting off with a Kiss

Pyrosia did not exactly walk with us. She hopped at times, but more often flew from tree to tree. Sometimes she’d rise just out of sight and then swoop back down, giving us the ‘all clear’, like she was scouting. I realized she was trying to be helpful, but her manic energy gave both Kiyomi and me anxiety.

It didn’t help that I still found her attractive. It hadn’t just been the song. I didn’t even find her bird attributes disturbing. This was what she was, just like Kiyomi was a fox.

Both were predators, in their own way, and the two would have to adjust to the others’ presence.

I waited until Pyrosia was back in the sky before I said to Kiyomi, “She’s okay. Give her a chance.”

“Do you like her?”

“What?”

“Do you like her? I see the way you’re looking at her.”

“I guess so, why?”

Kiyomi snorted. “I’m just wondering if you let her come with us because she keeps flashing her tits in your face.”

“No,” I replied, maybe a little defensively.

“Well, she certainly likes you.”

I sighed, not sure what was happening, or what I should say. “I did say she could come with us,” I replied, “She just wants to prove herself. Her energy, though, it’s a little much, isn’t it?”

Kiyomi nodded. She opened her mouth, but at that moment, Pyrosia swooped back down to hop along with us for a bit.

“No sign of danger,” she said happily, “You guys hungry? I’m starving. I could catch a rabbit, or maybe something larger?”

This was how much of the day went. As the day grew late, Pyrosia dropped to warn us that there were beastfolk nearby, led by a centaur. We changed course, heading a little more south than before.

“Be careful,” Kiyomi warned, “We’re heading into the Mistshadow. There might not be beastfolk there, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t dangerous.”

I blocked out the distractions of my companions and noticed for the first time that there was a different energy to these woods, almost more primal. It felt like when I’d been in the Druid Stone pocket realm, like the trees were awake and watching us. Like there were things hiding in the trees that I could not detect. I hoped they were friendly.

The further we progressed, I began to detect something else. There were more and more dead trees.

“These woods are sick,” I said.

Kiyomi paused to pluck a dead leaf from a branch. She crumbled it between her fingers. “You’re right.”

Pyrosia too looked visibly nervous. “We should turn north now.”

“What about the beastfolk?” I asked.

“I’d rather face them. At least we can see them. Something has poisoned these woods. I’ve seen it, it’s like a blight. It stretches along the mountains for miles. If we keep heading east, we’re going to be right in the middle of it.”

“It’s Exdohr,” Kiyomi said, “His darkness will eventually destroy all the Valley of Nymis. Isn’t that right, Pyrosia?”

I thought perhaps Kiyomi was only trying to rile the harpy up, but Pyrosia nodded.
