Suspicion stirred to life again at the amusement Tallis heard in Storm’s voice, but it was quickly eradicated, turned into heated lust and worried fury by Marika’s reply. “Go ahead and bring it, though if this works out as planned I have a feeling I won’t need clothes after Xanthus gets here.”

Storm laughed. “I’ll grab it.”

She opened the closet, then retraced her steps, opened a second closet. “So where’s the cat carrier?”

“You’ll have to use a pillowcase.”

Tallis couldn’t prevent his lips from pulling back in a silent snarl. Storm earned points with him by saying, “You’re kidding. You want me to put your cat in a sack?” though the amusement in her voice had deepened. “He’s going to be royally pissed at you.”

“I don’t quite trust him to behave himself.”

Tallis’ eyes narrowed into menacing slits. Feline ears flattened against his skull. He didn’t know what Marika was up to, but Xanthus being present made the situation dangerous and volatile.

Did she think that if her two men met, they’d reach a peaceful agreement? Did she think Xanthus—a male dragon in his prime—would willingly share a human he wanted to mate with?

Tallis hissed, his thoughts straying to the auction at the VanDenbergh estate, his conscience reminding him of how he’d basked in the potent heat and pheromones of the dragons attending. He had no one to blame but himself for this situation.

Despite her human years, Marika was young in comparison to him, young even among her own people. She was a Drui just reaching sexual maturity, only now ready to shed the wanderlust and settle in one place, to serve a territory.

It was natural she’d want the second male taking his place in her heart and her bed to be dominant and protective. Her mind might acknowledge that a dragon was a disastrous choice, but what defense did she have against her body’s craving for him?

Storm pulled a pillowcase from the linen closet she was standing in front of and turned. “You sure about this? At the moment he looks like he might bite my hand off if I try picking him up.”

“The only other choice is to leave him in the apartment,” Marika said, “I’d rather have him here with me when Xanthus arrives.”

Marika’s words were spoken to Storm, but Tallis knew they were directed at him. Marika would expect him to be listening, had probably instructed Storm to call her when she reached the apartment. In the cat’s form his hearing far surpassed a human’s, something Marika was well aware of.

It took a supreme effort of will for Tallis to appear friendly. His only hope lay in cooperating, in getting to Marika as quickly as possible and taking her out of the area.
