CHAPTER 7

Josie stepped into the small office of the roadside motel, rivulets of water pouring off her, gathering in a puddle at her feet. She let out a small sigh of relief at the warmth of the building. The rain had soaked them. Not a gentle light smattering, but a full-on downpour. They’d run the entire mile until they saw the lights of the motel. Her hair was drenched, hanging around her face like wet, stringy noodles. Her cheeks stung from the cold, icy pellets of rain.

Thankfully, Bex’s flannel had kept her arms and chest warm, but the thing was soaked, and now that she was inside, she could feel the water seeping past the cloth to her skin. But the worst was her socks. Soaked and squishy in her sneakers. Ew! Nothing was worse than wet socks.

“Oh my! Will you look at you two. Come in. Come in. Get out of that storm.”

Josie lifted her head at the gentle voice to see a small woman with light brown complexion. Small wrinkles graced the corners of her eyes and mouth. She stood behind an oak desk, computer in front of her, a worried smile on her face.

“Thank you.” Josie smiled back, wincing as her shoes made another squishing sound when she took a step. “Sorry about the mess.”

“Think nothing of it, sweetheart.” The woman dipped down behind the desk. Reemerging with two white, fluffy towels. She rounded the counter and handed one to Josie and the other to Bex. “I get truckers in here day and night covered in dirt and mud, and who knows what else. We don’t mind a little mess at the Hideaway Motel. That’s why we have hot showers in every room. Best water pressure on I-70.”

The woman beamed.

Josie rubbed the towel against her hair, squeezing the strands to soak up the rain. She wasn’t sure “best water pressure” was a selling point for most people, but a hot shower sounded like heaven right now.

“We don’t need a room,” Bex said, rubbing the towel along her bare arms. “Our car got a flat. Two, actually. We were just hoping we could use your phone to call a tow?”

“Of course, dear.” The woman shuffled back behind the counter, turning the desk phone toward Bex. “You want to call Sonny’s towing, the number is right here, you tell him Mabel sent you.”

“Thank you,” Bex said, grabbing the small card Mabel held in her hand.

As Bex called the tow truck, Josie glanced around the room. It was clean, sparse. Looked like any other roadside motel office. A picture of a duck flying over a lake with mountains in the back hung on one wall. Two chairs and a small table were set up in the corner next to a sideboard that had one of those coffee pod machines.

“Would you like something warm to drink?” Mabel offered, nodding toward the machine. “Might be a bit late for coffee, but I have some nice herbal tea over there. Have something while you wait.
