âSheâs still not picking up,â Roy said, flinging his phone onto the kitchen table. âI canât send her that sort of news in a text, can I?â
âNo,â Sammy agreed. âYou need to talk to her. Iâll text Jack for her parentsâ number. Eat some of that toast.â She pushed a plate towards him. âItâs going to be a long day today and you need something inside you to soak up all that alcohol. Iâll make a proper breakfast when the others finish in the shower.â
Roy nodded. Heâd sat up all night drinking and felt rough, tired and emotionally shattered. He was dreading the phone ringing with any further news but needed to know how Harley was doing. Jack had called first thing to say they were taking her for a scan at nine. How had things got so bad? Surely life couldnât throw anything else at his poor girl? His head was thumping and he felt sick. Coffee and toast might take the edge off.
Jack texted Livvyâs parentsâ number back to Sammy and Roy made one last attempt to call her cell phone. He was about to hang up when the call was answered. He could hear a childâs voice, distant, but chattering, and Roy shouted, âHello!â He heard giggling and then another childâs voice â RJ and Danny must have got hold of her phone. âRJ, itâs Daddy, give the phone to Mommy, please.â The chattering became muffled and intermittent and Roy realised whichever child it was had his hand over the mouthpiece. He tried again: âDanny give the phone to Mommy.â Still nothing, then a manâs voice, clear this time, saying, âBoys, itâs the middle of the night, youâre supposed to be sleeping. Youâre gonna disturb Mommy. Give me the phone and get back into bed.â Roy frowned as the call disconnected. The voice sounded like Hankâs. Middle of the night? Supposed to be sleeping? What the fuck was going on?
âWhatâs wrong, love?â Sammy sat down beside him.
âSomebody just answered the phone. The kids, or at least a kid, donât know if it was ours, hard to tell, it was all muffled, and then a guy told them to get back into bed and disconnected. Sounded like Hank.â
âMaybe theyâre home and sheâs not letting on because they want the kids for the weekend.â
âNo, I heard him say it was the middle of the night. I bet sheâs left the bloody kids with her parents and gone off to see Hank in LA. That was probably one of his grandchildren got hold of her phone. No wonder she doesnât want to talk to me.â
âCall Peter and Gina then, hereâs the number.â Sammy handed him the piece of paper sheâd scribbled it down on.
He dialled and waited. Peter answered and Roy asked to speak to Livvy.
âSheâs not here, Roy,â Peter replied. âSheâs gone to LA with the wee boys. Weâre picking her up tomorrow afternoon. Try her cell phone later today if itâs urgent.â
âLA?â Roy spluttered. âOh, of course. Thank you.
