CHAPTER 16

I am tired.

That was the first thought that whizzed through my head as Diana gunned the engine and spun her tires on the way out of my neighborhood.

I am way too tired for any of this.

The universe really doesn’t give a shit if I’m tired.

That was the second thought if they could even be called thoughts at the speed we were traveling. More like scattered notions interspersed with bright moments of sheer terror. Thankfully, because of the red lights, I had a few seconds to collect my thoughts.

There was a lot to think about and little time to understand any of it. I’m accustomed to a general state of confusion, but this was bit much, even for me. So, I kicked it around in those few terror-free seconds, hoping something would be uncovered under all the debris in my head, something that could shed some light on this mess. And it was a mess.

Hannah was gone. No, not gone: taken. There was no way of knowing if they were going to use her to get to me or just use her for some weirdness I could not even imagine. I had been arrested for assault. Spending time in jail is not my idea of a fun night, even if a cute EMT was giving me the eye while she was patching me up. Allison was….

I don’t know what the hell Allison was. She was obviously concerned about the thing with Hannah and me, although she didn’t seem jealous. There was that awkward kiss Allison laid on me, and I had no clue what to even begin to think about that. And, if all that wasn’t enough, I was about to involve Justin in what could very well be a felony. If we got caught it would probably end his career. It would certainly jeopardize my tenuous relationship with the police department, and that would jeopardize my ability to pay the bills.

My head swam from all the nonsense sloshing around in it. Then again, it could have been the way Diana was driving. I wasn’t sure it qualified as driving. Incremental vehicular suicide would be a better term. And what was Diana’s deal, anyway?

For certain she was into some weird shit. She had to be if she was hanging out with Whitehall. And what did she know about these thugs and the stolen knife? And what the hell was Whitehall’s connection to the group?

I realized at that moment that I didn’t even know what to call these people. I had been calling them various versions of punk, but surely, they had a name or something. They had all the aspects of a cult, at least to my knowledge. They had to have a name for themselves; it’s part of the cult starter kit. I felt a serious need to know that name, if for no other reason than to know what to call the people who were, almost certainly, trying to kill me.

My heart raced, and my emotions swung from confused to pissed and back again.
