Chapter Twenty-Seven -Meeting Keya

––––––––

t was early in the night, which was filled with brilliant, gem-like stars. Silmavalien was wakened by the dragons, to see Aelaza come leaping down the cliff. She wondered what was happening. She had not seen Aelaza for months. At least, it felt like months. She and the dragons saw other Ellenari disappearing above the cliff, going one way or that, but most of them together.

In a moment, Aelaza stood before her. “You and the dragons are to go down to the plain at once,” she said.

“Did I do wrong?” asked Silmavalien. “When I thought, this evening, of going down, and the dragons thought it better to wait until morning, should I have pushed it?”

“I do not know,” said Aelaza, “and there is no time for me to answer these questions. If you go down at once, you will face no trouble doing so.”

“I need to know!” said Silmavalien.

“Do what you know you must do now, and do not worry or waste time about the past. I'm not even human, and I can't help you with this. We will protect you, but you must go at once.”

“Okay,” said Silmavalien, still distressed. She had Coroneth land on the ledge, and settled herself on his shoulders. The others grabbed the bags, in their mouths or in their claws. Tiela grabbed Lighter. With a dizzying lurch, Coroneth dropped from the ledge and spread his wings, stopping their fall, and gaining altitude to glide down to the plains. She gripped him tightly between her legs, which burned from the effort, especially in her half-healed wounds.

Yes, Coro. I know I'm kind of heavy, but you're only carrying me a short distance, and that mostly down!

Silmavalien sat straight, following Coroneth's instructions, but she hated it. She wanted to lean down and wrap her arms around his neck, to make her feel more secure. The cold wind blew in her face with a lot of force. Coroneth told her that it would not help her to wrap her arms around his neck, and it would interfere with him. There were a lot of dragons flying around and under them. If she did fall off, someone would catch her. To make her comfortable, they would fly rather high, and not get close to the ground, until landing.

It was not long, before they felt a cold and foul wind, and a maddening terror. Silmavalien, uncomfortable as she was, tense, sore, and uncomfortable, twisted around, on Coroneth's shoulders. She looked up, and saw two wings moving, blotting out the stars, diving for them. Looking around she saw several more of the creatures. Fear overcame her. The Ellena had lied to her! She had gone down at once and they were having trouble, and they would be destroyed, killed, thrown out of the skies into the ground and the void! She cowered, throwing herself forward over Coroneth's shoulder, and her arm up.

She felt Coroneth swerve under her, trying to compensate for what she had done with her weight, and not to lose her.
