Eleven fetch quests, eight kill quests, three puzzles, and six back-and-forth message quests later, the starter city had only one glowing exclamation point left.

As soon as the Keth woman mentioned her daughter had gone out to gather herbs and not returned, plus had a tendency to get randomly lost, Kelly and Paige both groaned in dread. Sure enough, it turned out to be an escort quest. Worse, due to the inherent incompatibility of inserting real children into a video game world, they had no mini-map or quest waypoints. Rather than following a directional arrow straight to the missing daughter, Kelly once again had to zigzag across the map searching the hard way for the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Fortunately, Übergirl’s eyesight had become super. Much, much better than it had been prior to the arrival of the Nolmek. They located the young Keth woman near the northern edge of the starting zone, deep in a forest. Despite all the dangerous looking monsters, the teenage Keth calmly stood by a tree, trying unsuccessfully to grab a white moth out of the air.

“Hello,” said Kelly. “Are you Reza? Your mother sent us to help you go home.”

“I’m scared,” said Reza. “I don’t know where I am. I’ve wandered too far into the woods. Will you lead me home?”

Kelly face-palmed. “Yes, that’s what I said. Come on.”

Reza stood there for a few minutes doing nothing until randomly blurting, “The forest is so dark.”

“Ugh.” Kelly sighed.

“Start walking. She’s probably following us already.” Paige backed up, but Reza ignored her. “She’s tagged on you since you talked to her.”

Kelly moved to the right.

Reza turned to keep facing her.

“Okay. Yeah. She’s following.”

Kelly started back toward the Keth city on foot, grumbling at not being able to fly and get it over with easy and fast. Reza followed her like a robot, constantly traveling in a straight line directly toward Kelly. This led to her getting stuck on trees, bushes, and rocks quite often, where she’d stop moving forward while still animating as if she walked.

Each time the girl got stuck, Kelly snarled, having to backtrack enough to make her turn around and unstick herself from the terrain, then lead her around it. As if the girl’s stupid pathing wasn’t annoying enough, after five minutes, she blurted, “Ooh! A lavender rosewort!” and raced off in a random direction.

Kelly folded her arms, standing there and tapping her foot while she waited for the girl to fetch the herb and return.

Reza rushed over to a glowing purple flower—and another ambush of wolf-pig monsters. They ‘killed’ her in seconds, causing her to disappear entirely. The pack of dogs also vanished as a ‘quest failed’ trombone noise played from the sky.

“Argh!” shouted Kelly. “I hate escort missions!”

“Chill. We just need to go back and start it over. Annoying, but not the end.” Paige tugged on her arm. “C’mon.”

They headed back to where they’d found her. Sure enough, Reza stood there like nothing happened.

“Hi,” deadpanned Kelly. “You must be Reza. Your mother sent us to find you.
