Chapter Seven

Unobtrusively Gina studied Nick in the dim light of the truck’s dashboard lights. He looked like a stranger. A mysterious stranger. A shiver skated over her skin, but it wasn’t a shiver of fear, it was a shiver of anticipation. Anticipation at the prospect of plumbing the depths of Nick Balfour’s personality. Of delving into the secrets of his body.

Her breathing shortened as her eyes dropped to his strongly muscled thighs. A wave of heat engulfed her, drying her mouth. What kind of lover would he be? she wondered. What would it feel like to be pressed against his naked body?

Gina swallowed as her breasts began to tingle, seeming to swell under the weight of the evocative thought.

“What did you think of the lecture?”

Nick’s words echoed oddly in her ears as if they were coming from a distance. With a massive effort, she throttled her imagination and refocused on the reality of Nick’s deep voice.

“Not much.” To Gina’s relief her voice came out sounding normal. She would feel humiliated if he were to realize just how obsessed she was becoming with him. She couldn’t bear for him to think she was an emotionally immature woman who became completely flustered when faced with an attractive man. Because she wasn’t, she assured herself. She might not have much experience, but inexperience and immaturity weren’t the same thing at all.

“I was expecting something insightful and all I got was a hard sell for her flash cards,” Gina said. “Can you imagine any mother being dumb enough to prop up a two-month-old baby and show it flash cards of all things?”

“Yes, unfortunately, I can,” Nick said dryly. “What’s worse, I think a lot of those mothers live right here in town. Did you notice the number of people buying her cards after the talk?”

No, I was too busy watching her hitting on you, Gina thought.

“I suppose they can’t do any harm,” she said slowly. “In fact, they might even do some good if the person were to hold the child while flipping those cards. Body contact is important to babies.”

“Body contact is important to everyone.” Nick’s voice deepened perceptively.

Gina shifted restlessly in her seat as his dark voice rasped sensually over her nerves. Was his comment a double entendre? Was she supposed to respond to it if she wanted him to follow up on it? And if so, what kind of response was called for? A feeling of frustration gripped her. She didn’t know. She would be wise to ignore the whole thing and opt for a safer subject. There was less possibility of embarrassing herself that way.

“You raised some very interesting points about brain development,” Gina said, remembering something that had bothered her at the time. How had Nick known about that study? And known it well enough to quote it. She’d never heard of it, and she’d had a child development course. So where did a guy living in the back of beyond run across it?
