Dixon arrived back in Brent Knoll just after 10 p.m. He had called in to see Doreen on the way, breaking the news to her that Parker’s convictions would be quashed on Friday, and as expected, she had been delighted. It had been a struggle, but he had managed to get out without telling her why, which was a bonus.

The barking had started right on cue when his diesel engine rattled to a standstill, and he walked in the back door of the cottage to find Jane sitting in between Lucy and Billy on the sofa, all of them with their arms folded tightly across their chests.

‘You’ve spoken to your father?’ asked Dixon, standing in front of the television and looking down at Billy.

The grunt sounded positive.

‘What did he tell you?’

‘There’s going to be a retrial and he may get bail on Friday, he may not.’

‘That is what we call in the real world, good news,’ said Dixon.

‘I tried explaining it to him.’ Jane nudged the boy and smiled at him.

‘I’m going to microwave a curry, then we’ll drop you home, Billy,’ said Dixon, walking into the kitchen.

‘It’s all right, I’ll stay,’ said Billy.

‘It wasn’t an offer.’ Dixon was stabbing the film lid of a frozen curry. ‘It was a statement of what is going to happen. Tell me you understand the difference.’

‘He does,’ said Lucy. She appeared in the doorway of the kitchen, leaning on the frame.

‘What’s his problem?’ asked Dixon.

‘His social worker says he’s still a ward of court and can’t see his father unsupervised even if he gets out.’

‘That’ll only be temporary.’

‘He knows that.’

‘As soon as his father is acquitted he can apply for residency and the wardship will come to an end. He just needs to stay patient.’

‘I’ll tell him.’

‘Make sure you do, Lucy. His father’s been through enough without him mucking it up now.’
