"What are you doing here?"
I look back over my shoulder to my lower half, just below the water's surface. Our legs are parallel and moving in sync with each other, but my feet extend several inches past hers in the water. Her legs have the muscular build shaped by these hours carving through the unstoppable force of nature on a sheet of foam and wax, but they're inherently feminine, soft and toned and exquisitely molded. Mine are thick and bulky and hairier than Addison probably prefers. I suspect that Kimo was waxed.
"Kicking," I tell her. "Should I not be?"
Addison takes an agonized breath. "You know that's not what I meant. You hate me. Why are you here? How did you even find us?"
"Were you hiding from me?"
"Why would I need to do that?" she cries out with so much emotion that my gaze goes from her distractingly rounded ass up to her face. Her brow is heavily creased, and water is welling in her eyelashes, water I suspect didn't come from the ocean. âThe fact that you hate me is on you, not me.â
I'm the one who's been wronged. She's the one who rejected me. She's the one who said the miscarriage was a good thing. I've wasted a lot of time wondering what would happen if she tried to apologize, would it make a difference since my days of fun with Theo seem to be over and there's Connor now. I tell myself I wouldn't forgive her, but who am I kidding? There was a time, one that might not have passed yet, where I'd cave immediately just to have some piece of myself back. Instead, the only serious conversation she's ever attempted with me was to accuse me of drugging her in Sugarloaf.
There were no rules. It was morally wrong, but it was fair play, and it got me Connor. I'll never apologize for that.
But I don't like seeing her cry regardless of if her tears are justified or not. "I don't hate you."
I'm shocked her neck doesn't break with the speed she twists her head away from me.
"I mean it."
"The only reason a man would keep a mother away from her child is if he hates her."
She says it so matter-of-factly, like she knows everything and thinks my reasoning was purely to hurt her and she wasn't the one who agreed to my demands. It's true I took it to the extreme of her not having any contact with Connor at all because I hoped she would balk and be the one to bow out of this situation, especially considering how hot she was to judge me for my unconventional lifestyle. But I'm serious about not wanting to harm Connor by forcing him into a broken home and custody arrangements and parents fighting over him.
"Or a man whose mom would vanish for months at a time just to come back every time like everything was fine,â I counter. âA man who doesn't want the same for his son.
