BEFORE JACK COULD RESPOND to this plan for his entertainment, the big screen on his wall flickered to life and Nigel’s cherubic countenance appeared. ‘Sorry to butt in like this, Jack,’ he grimaced apologetically. ‘Roy’s tied up and asked me to show you something. He says it might be important.’

‘Fire away then, kid,’ Jack made himself more comfortable in his chair. ‘Give us a glimpse of geek heaven.’

‘Roy received a mysterious email two days ago,’ Nigel said nervously. ‘This is what it said. “Roy, you need to investigate Dean Watson. He’s important, but I don’t know how or why. I just know you need to dig deeper. I’m sorry about everything”.’

‘That’s weird,’ Marco looked at Jack. ‘Why didn’t Roy tell us when he received it?’

‘He wanted to see if he could trace it back to the source computer.’

‘And did he?’ Keith frowned.

‘Yes,’ Nigel gulped. ‘An internet cafe in London.’

‘This is like pulling teeth,’ Marco griped when the other man stopped speaking. ‘What did he do then?’

‘He hacked the CCTV footage of the cafe and checked the recordings for the hour during which the mail was sent,’ Nigel looked as if he was warming up to his theme. ‘He spotted a hooded figure he thought was very likely the sender, but he doesn’t have access to the London camera network because it’s notoriously difficult to hack. So he asked Rasher if he could track the journey of the mystery e-mailer and see if he could come up with an image.’

‘That’s great,’ Marco smiled enthusiastically. ‘What was the outcome?’

‘Rasher sent an image this morning, but just as Roy received it he had to shoot off on an errand for the boss,’ Nigel looked nervous again. ‘He asked me to show it to Jack because he says it’s important.’

‘Throw it up on the monitor,’ Jack ordered.

Nigel disappeared and a miniaturised version of his face popped up in the corner of the screen. A large image replaced him for all to see.

‘Is that who I think it is?’ Marco’s mouth popped open.

Jack slowly got to his feet and slanted his eyes at the screen. ‘It’s Billi,’ he said definitively.

‘Holy shit,’ Keith rubbed the back of his head. ‘This is freaky.’

‘She must have been in London all this time,’ Marco was wide-eyed. ‘Who’s that woman she’s with?’

‘I don’t know her,’ Jack scowled. ‘This is some weird development. I was totally convinced the Bird was dead.’

‘The boss always insisted she was alive,’ Marco reminded him.

Jack scowled even more.

‘I thought you might like me to do a bit of digging into this Dean Watson character,’ Nigel looked hopeful of finding approval. ‘He got bail after he was charged with fraud, but still has to sign on at his local police station every week. There’s nothing to suggest he hasn’t been doing that. His girlfriend was charged with the same offences, and she’s been keeping her nose clean as well from what I can see. They’re scheduled for trial around March. I found a pic of them coming out of court after the arraignment, if you’d like to see it.
