BEFORE JACK COULD RESPOND to this plan for his entertainment, the big screen on his wall flickered to life and Nigelâs cherubic countenance appeared. âSorry to butt in like this, Jack,â he grimaced apologetically. âRoyâs tied up and asked me to show you something. He says it might be important.â
âFire away then, kid,â Jack made himself more comfortable in his chair. âGive us a glimpse of geek heaven.â
âRoy received a mysterious email two days ago,â Nigel said nervously. âThis is what it said. âRoy, you need to investigate Dean Watson. Heâs important, but I donât know how or why. I just know you need to dig deeper. Iâm sorry about everythingâ.â
âThatâs weird,â Marco looked at Jack. âWhy didnât Roy tell us when he received it?â
âHe wanted to see if he could trace it back to the source computer.â
âAnd did he?â Keith frowned.
âYes,â Nigel gulped. âAn internet cafe in London.â
âThis is like pulling teeth,â Marco griped when the other man stopped speaking. âWhat did he do then?â
âHe hacked the CCTV footage of the cafe and checked the recordings for the hour during which the mail was sent,â Nigel looked as if he was warming up to his theme. âHe spotted a hooded figure he thought was very likely the sender, but he doesnât have access to the London camera network because itâs notoriously difficult to hack. So he asked Rasher if he could track the journey of the mystery e-mailer and see if he could come up with an image.â
âThatâs great,â Marco smiled enthusiastically. âWhat was the outcome?â
âRasher sent an image this morning, but just as Roy received it he had to shoot off on an errand for the boss,â Nigel looked nervous again. âHe asked me to show it to Jack because he says itâs important.â
âThrow it up on the monitor,â Jack ordered.
Nigel disappeared and a miniaturised version of his face popped up in the corner of the screen. A large image replaced him for all to see.
âIs that who I think it is?â Marcoâs mouth popped open.
Jack slowly got to his feet and slanted his eyes at the screen. âItâs Billi,â he said definitively.
âHoly shit,â Keith rubbed the back of his head. âThis is freaky.â
âShe must have been in London all this time,â Marco was wide-eyed. âWhoâs that woman sheâs with?â
âI donât know her,â Jack scowled. âThis is some weird development. I was totally convinced the Bird was dead.â
âThe boss always insisted she was alive,â Marco reminded him.
Jack scowled even more.
âI thought you might like me to do a bit of digging into this Dean Watson character,â Nigel looked hopeful of finding approval. âHe got bail after he was charged with fraud, but still has to sign on at his local police station every week. Thereâs nothing to suggest he hasnât been doing that. His girlfriend was charged with the same offences, and sheâs been keeping her nose clean as well from what I can see. Theyâre scheduled for trial around March. I found a pic of them coming out of court after the arraignment, if youâd like to see it.
