The next morning, Roishin continued going through every single notated paragraph again and again. She studied, nearly memorizing the marked text, not entirely sure what she needed to know or why. She’d showered, as Enori called it, and was sitting on the bed putting her boots on when Enori appeared in the open doorway of her bedroom.

She was back in one of her flowing white gowns. The relaxed, easy-to-smile woman Roishin had come to know the last two days was gone. Back was the woman with piercing eyes and a cool, aloof demeanor. She looked Roishin over, making her feel extremely nervous.

“Did I do something wrong?” Roishin asked, pausing in her task.

Without a word, Enori stepped away but returned a moment later. She carried a leather strip in her hand. “Turn a bit,” she said. “So your back is to me.”

Roishin did as she was told. When the leather strip was set on the bed next to her and Enori began to brush her hair back, Roishin thought she got the idea. She held still, allowing Enori to pull her hair back into a single thick braid down her back.

“We have to be as contained as possible,” she said, her fingers gentle in their task to bringing Roishin’s mane to heel. “Can leave nothing behind.”

Roishin swallowed nervously, as she could feel the intensity of Enori’s energy in that moment. She had no idea what they were about to do, but she was getting the message quite clearly that it was serious business.

“Is that why you keep your hair short?”

“Partly, yes. The biggest part. Sorry,” Enori said, giving Roishin’s shoulder a little squeeze in apology as she tugged a bit too hard.

“Should I cut mine?”

“Something you can consider, yes. But if you are opposed, there are other ways, such as this.” She tugged lightly on the braid she was creating. “You studied?” she asked casually.

“I did,” Roishin said proudly. “Pretty sure I know that book backward and forward.” She smiled at the little chuckle she heard.

“I want you to put a portrait together in your mind of who would be present in a stage crew,” she said. “What type of person? What tasks would they perform, and what would they wear to do them?”

Roishin allowed her mind to wander back into the pages she’d read, paragraphs she’d studied, and images she’d drawn from the words.

“Do you see him?” Enori asked, her words not much more than a hum.

“Yes,” Roishin murmured, the person in her mind taking shape.

“See him,” Enori said. “Know his every detail.” She reached for the leather strip and tied it tightly at the end of the braid. She leaned over Roishin, murmuring into her ear. “Be him.”
