“Rainer! So good to see you, son. Come grab a drink with me outside.” Another older man in a suit was smiling genially at Rainer after clapping him on the shoulder.

Rainer’s eyes cut to mine and he grimaced, his hand squeezing against mine. I still hadn’t become used to being touched, but he had been unable to let go of my hand any time I was within reach tonight. And damn those butterflies in my stomach. They were really enjoying it. “I promise I’ll be right back.”

I gave him a small grin and shrugged my shoulders as his hand slipped from mine. There was really nothing else to do. This had been happening all night. Random men coming over to talk business or ask how he was doing or pull him away for some discussion. I didn’t blame him for hating the business side of things. I would want to hide in the vineyards all the time, too if all these people were begging for my attention.

Once he had disappeared into the crowd, I weaved my way across the function hall and then started up the wide, curved staircase to the upper balcony. At least it was less crowded up here. I leaned against the wooden railing and watched all the people mingling and laughing below me until the DJ announced the bride and groom’s first dance. A circle quickly formed around them as all their friends and family gathered to watch.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Mrs. Ventrilla’s voice was like windchimes, perfectly adding into the romantic music flowing from the speakers. I suppose I had known this moment was coming the entire night, but it didn’t change the tense way I had been holding myself all evening. She had asked for me to be here tonight for a reason. If there was one thing I had learned in my observations lately, it was that Adriana Ventrilla always had a schedule. Tonight, I was on it.

I glanced to my right and took her in. Her dark hair was piled atop her head with a few curls artfully pulled loose to fall around her face. Tonight, her dress was a deep purple but when she moved, the light caught on tiny beads throughout it which gave the illusion that she was shimmering. I knew, because I had been keeping tabs on her all night, wondering when she would come and find me. In her heels, she had a good six inches on me, but I refused to cower beside her. I had done nothing wrong here.

I followed her gaze out to the dance floor where other couples were beginning to join in with the newlyweds. “Dancing?” I finally asked.

It was her turn to study me now while I kept my gaze fixed on the swirling people below us. After another minute, she made a hum in the back of her throat and looked back down to the dance floor. “Love in general.” I couldn’t help myself, I snorted out a derisive laugh then cleared my throat in an attempt to cover it up.
