Chapter Twelve

Mitchell’s mouth hangs open, but he doesn’t speak. I just dropped a bombshell on him.

The interrogation room door opens, and Dad walks in. “Here you two are. I’ve been looking all over for you.”

“You’re not going to believe this Dad, but my senses told me that Peter Morissette is Greta Lowe’s father.”

“He hired his own daughter to be his housekeeper?” Dad asks.

“I don’t think Greta has any idea, but Peter knows the truth.”

“Greta did say that Peter Morissette was fatherly toward her,” Mitchell says. “So he had a child with another woman, and Bridget didn’t know about it.”

“There’s always the chance she found out,” Dad says. “We might need to consider the possibility that Bridget accidentally poisoned herself.”

“I’m not following, Dad.”

“What if she meant to poison Greta or Peter, but she wound up poisoning herself by mistake?”

“Why would someone take her body if she accidentally killed herself?” I ask.

“The life insurance policy!” Mitchell says. “It didn’t cover suicide. If it could be proven that she killed herself, the family might not get access to the payout from her life insurance policy. They’d want to cover that up to ensure they got the money.”

“Okay, let’s slow down,” I say, holding up my hand. “All we know for sure is that Peter is Greta’s father. We need to call him in here and get him to confirm that.”

“You’re right. I can’t force either of them to take a paternity test. I have no reason to link their relation to Bridget’s murder or kidnapping.”

“You can’t even prove she was murdered yet,” Dad says. “I talked to Rudy before I came here. He needs Bridget’s body to run more tests and conclude she was poisoned.”

And we have no idea where her body is. “I feel like this case is getting more complicated the more we dig into this family.”

“Yeah,” Mitchell says, “and the family keeps getting bigger.”

“Because now we know Greta is actually a Morissette, too,” Dad says.

“Mitchell and I found out yesterday that Clinton Morissette might not be Peter’s son. The chef, Vera Baker, thinks Clinton might actually be Peter’s brother’s son.”

Dad shakes his head. “I feel like I stepped into a soap opera here. This is crazy.”

“Rich people,” Mitchell says. “All that money makes them do a lot of wacky things.”

“Wacky is putting it mildly,” I say.

“So there were two big affairs leading to children with people other than their spouses,” Dad says.

“Looks that way.”

“I’m starting to think we need to sit the entire family down in a room together and get everything out in the open,” Mitchell says.

“You know the chaos that would ensue from that.” Dad’s always the levelheaded one, but I might actually disagree with him this time.

“I’m not sure, Dad. The only two who should be upset with each other are Peter and Bridget Morissette.”

“And Bridget is dead,” Mitchell says.

I point to him. “Exactly.”

“I still think it’s dangerous to gather the family and air all their dirty laundry like that.” Dad crosses his arms as he thinks. “You should talk to Clinton.
