Try this second test: Buddy starts sitting next to you. He should get up and move with you because you said, “Let’s go.”

Go into the fenced area and sit Buddy next to you and then remove his leash.

While he sits there, pet him on his head to put him into pack drive (see Chapter 2 about drives).

Smile and say “Let’s go,” and then start walking; Buddy should move with you.

Give the Buddy, Heel command off leash and start to walk forward. Praise him as he moves with you. Don’t go more than a few steps the first time. Say “Okay” to release and have a big party together. What a great dog Buddy has become.

If he doesn’t move with you, you need more practice on leash. The best way to teach a dog to work off leash is on leash. If you step off saying, “Buddy, Heel,” and he doesn’t move with you, reach back with an open palm for his collar to guide him up, and encourage him to move with you.

Often the reason a dog won’t move while off leash is because the leash has been too tight while you trained and he has become used to the feel of the leash. Practice more, going back to using the leash, but be careful to keep the leash loosely placed over your right shoulder. Keep your hands off the leash but in place ready to use as necessary to bring Buddy back to your side with a check.
