Chapter 22
An unlikely alliance
HARRY woke up. He was alone in Cat World and sitting facing the statue. Was it his imagination, he wondered, or did the statue bear a striking resemblance to Montgomery?
At least he was free of the restraints that had been digging into his paws. Rubbing at the welts, Harry sensed there was someone else in the room.
He realised he was right, when a shadow peeled itself off the wall and approached him. It moved toward him, bringing with it yellow eyes shaped like a football. The shadow with yellow eyes stopped an inch away from Harryâs snout.
âHello, Harry,â the shadow said.
Harry saw that it was a cat. And because he was a well-mannered dog, he said: âHello.â
âIâm Anastasia.â
The cat stared long and hard at Harry, as if Harry was supposed to have done something, which from the look on the catâs face he had clearly forgotten to do.
Finally, she said, in a shrill voice (because thatâs how all cats speak), âIâm your guide home.â
âBut I already know how to get home.â
Anastasia flicked her tail at his nose. She turned toward the archway.
âComing?â she asked.
By now she was already halfway to the tunnel. Not wanting to spend another second in this underground chamber of horrors, Harry sped off after her. They walked along the tunnel in silence, even though Harry had millions of questions he wanted to ask. But he was stumped with where to begin. He wanted to ask how the cats had ended up underground. He wanted to know why the cats, and not the Tooth Fairy, had their puppy teeth. And most importantly, he wanted to ask why the other cats let Montgomery lead them in a singalong when the fluffy cat clearly couldnât sing.
But for the first time, perhaps ever in his life, Harry was truly mystified. He was ordinarily a dog of action. He usually had a destination, even if he lacked a plan on how to get there. He did things because they were there to be done, preferring to leave the rhyme and reason to Junior and Fleabag. But his best friends had stopped talking to him after heâd refused to tell Grizzly the location of Cat World. Perhaps that was why he was feeling so indecisive, he thought.
âYouâre terrible at playing spy games,â Anastasia said, interrupting Harryâs thoughts. âYou could have told Montgomery that his potion had worked, and heâd be none the wiser.â
âBut that would have been a lie. Dogs believe it is wrong to tell lies,â Harry said.
âIs that so? Then how come you lied to Grizzly about the statue?â
âThat was an omission. An omission of the truth is different to a lie.â
Deep in thought, Harry tried to match the smells to scents from home. For example, the sweet smell of damp earth was like a wet towel. The scent of strange animal droppings was like the time a flock of seagulls had invaded his yard after a bag of hot chips had been spilled. And the pungent
