Just then, a watchman in the crow’s nest gave a quick shout. I sat bolt upright in Hammad’s arms.

What’s going on? I yipped.

I felt the engines grinding and the ship swinging about.

Hammad ran with me to the starboard rail. He staggered backward as a pale mass passed swiftly by. It was like the white wall of a tunnel and our ship was a railroad train too broad to fit through it. I heard a crunch. Then a rough scraping sound against the side of the vessel. It rattled the glass of all two thousand portholes.

From the bridge, an alarm pierced the air.

Somewhere, I heard boots hit the deck running. Men spoke in voices of shock and disbelief.

The Titanic had just hit something. And I knew deep in my doggie heart just what that something was.

A giant iceberg!
