Chapter Seven
From the start Sharon had been promising herself this all the time. It could be the ship going out to Greece, the ship where he was helping out a doctor friend. Then when they had sailed and she had been introduced to the ship’s surgeon, Dr. Hewitt, she had been bitterly disappointed. She had never realized that something else was afoot. Dr. Hewitt was going on a cruise to South Africa, changing ships at Algiers; it had suited him much better that Glynn should fly out to him there.
Glynn had been dining with the captain when he had been called last night to go to see Sharon in her cabin. She was, the stewardess said, semi-conscious, and apparently suffering from a bad attack of the sun. He told her now what had happened.
‘You must never go ashore again without proper head covering; fancy your being such a little fool!’
She began to cry. She was in that weepy stage which meant that she could not pull herself together as she wanted to, and it made her ashamed.
‘I wanted you so much,’ she wept.
He put out a hand and took hers, patting it sympathetically. ‘It’s all right. I’m here now, and for all the rest of the cruise unless anything unforeseen happens. I have a feeling about that, they always say the Welsh are born with a sixth sense, the sense of foreknowledge. I can assure you that it has spoilt an awful lot of my life for me. Now look here; there can be no getting up today.’
‘I could, you know.’
‘If you do, then the headache will return immediately, you must take care.’
‘But Jane will want me.’
‘Don’t you believe it. Jane is sitting in the Dragon Bar having a hair of the dog that bit her. I know all about her, so don’t you think twice. I understand her,’ and he grinned. The red mouth was amused, the dark eyes sparkling a little. ‘You are to have fruit only today. Lie very still and the cabin must be kept darkened.’
She was glad of that; she had the feeling that the light would be harsh and worry her. For the first time she began to notice the details of the cabin. It was massed with flowers. There was the heavy sweetness of gardenias, pink roses, and the huge lemon-scented lilies of the east. ‘Where did all these flowers come from?’ she asked.
‘I believe it was Mr. Mercer. He’s like that. When he found out you were ill he ordered them for you.’
‘For Jane, not for me, surely?’
He looked at her. ‘For you, my girl!’ he said, and for a moment she thought that there was something searching in his eyes. As if he wanted to know more, as if there were something that he suspected about her. The eyes read through her again and again. ‘Why do you think old Claud Mercer flew out here and joined the ship?’ he asked her. ‘One thing is certain, it wasn’t to bear me company.
