Chapter Twelve

Tim’s blood rushed to his head and he sat down heavily on the arm of the couch again. He didn’t know whether his light-headedness came from the realization that the sniper could be Azra Balik, or that he’d readily admitted to Jane that he did, indeed, know of a female sniper.

Her mouth formed an O. “You’re kidding me. Now I feel bad for being sexist and assuming there were no women in the sniping business. Who is she?”

He pinched his chin. “Her name is Azra Balik. She’s Turkish. The Russians have used her before.”

“That’s great.” Jane’s gaze flicked to the closed drapes. “They hired a professional sniper to take me out? What are my chances of getting through this investigation alive?”

“We can’t be sure it’s her.” He jiggled the bag. “This may not even belong to the sniper.”

“We’re still talking about a sniper here, aiming a scope through my window. Whether the shooter is a he or a she, Turkish, Russian or Icelandic is not really the point, is it?” She rubbed her arms. “I’ve had criminals unhappy with me in the past, but this is a whole other level.”

“They’re trying to intimidate you, Jane. They understand that murdering a police officer is, like you said, a whole other level. They don’t want it to get to that.”

“That makes two of us.” She rubbed her eyes, smearing a bit of mascara down her cheek.

“You look tired. It’s been a long night at the end of an even longer day.” He put the bag with the cigarette back in his pocket. “We both have our assignments for tomorrow. I’m going to look into this cigarette butt and the current whereabouts of Azra Balik. You need to process the items and information about the explosion at Austin’s container. Your team can get a handle from the fire department on the type of explosive used and all that, right?”

“I’m sure they’re on it, already. I’m taking those pieces of jewelry we found in the debris to Ivan’s with me.”

Tim whistled. “You’re going in hot. They’ll probably toss you out as fast as they tossed me out. Be careful.”

“Careful is my middle name.” She put her hand over her heart.

Tim folded his arms, bunching his fists under his armpits. Careful enough to let him stay the night again?

He lifted his shoulders. “I could camp out in the guest bedroom again tonight.”

She spun away from him and grabbed her empty wineglass from the table. “I don’t think that’s necessary. We know there’s nobody out on the trail tonight.”

He blew out his disappointment on a harsh breath. “Okay, Jane Careful Falco. Lock up and keep your gun handy.”

She looked up from rinsing her glass at the sink. “I always do.”

His eyebrows jumped. “Even when your life isn’t being threatened by Russian mobsters?”

“Always.” This time she kept her head down, concentrating on the glass.

Did she still fear her ex? He stared at her stiff shoulders for a second. “Good to know. We’ll touch base tomorrow...and I’m glad you know all about Lana now.
