Chapter Four:

An Introduction to Networking With Docker

The containerization of Docker is a powerful tool in and of itself but the hard truth of the fact is that if all Docker did was create containers then it wouldn’t be gaining the popularity that it has been. That popularity comes from Docker’s ability to network containers together. We briefly touched on some of the networking features that Docker uses when we tackled the exercises in the previous chapters. We’ve really only just scratched the surface of Docker networking.

In this chapter we will first take an overview of networking in Docker to get a sense of what is and isn’t possible. From there we’ll move into using bridge networks, overlay networks, host networking and macvlan networks. There will be exercises along the way, of course, and we’ll also take a look at how we can disable networking for specific containers. With this in place, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to get started with Docker in your DevOps workflow today!
