There are many valuable resources available to teen parents today. They can attend classes to learn how to care for their children while continuing their education.

Such support does not exist everywhere. In 1999, US District Judge William Bertelsman ruled that two Kentucky teenagers who had gotten pregnant could not be excluded from the National Honor Society.14 Yet many people strongly believe that the National Honor Society should most definitely not accept students who have gotten pregnant. They argue that the National Honor Society was correct to deny admission to the two teen mothers. According to them, the Honor Society should require a higher moral standard from students they accept. Unwed mothers, even if they do well in school, are not good role models, they say.15

Some people believe that not only should society not accept teen pregnancy, but it should strongly condemn teenage sexuality and childbearing. According to these folks, the main cause of teenage pregnancy in the United States is the sexually permissive attitudes of today’s teens. The debate in America over the causes and solutions to the problem of teen pregnancy and childbearing is destined to continue.
