Please Lord, Let Her Live

Kenneth Taylor

Kenneth Taylor’s family was living in the small town of Winona Lake, located 120 miles from Chicago. Kenneth worked in Chicago and commuted home on the weekends. His wife, Margaret, was pregnant with their fifth child.

I received the call around 2:00 a.m. Fortunately, the ancient car started on that frigid January morning, and I arrived at the hospital about three hours later. It was a country hospital without the usual “no fathers permitted” rules of that period. When I arrived in the delivery room, Margaret was under heavy sedation. Almost immediately I saw the top of our baby’s head begin to appear, but one of the nurses pushed it back and held it there while they waited for the doctor to arrive.

I had never seen a birth and knew very little about the process, but it seemed to me it would be safer to let my little one be born. The nurses said no, they had to wait until the doctor was present. When he hadn’t arrived after fifteen minutes, I demanded that they let the baby out, but they still refused. The nurses were obviously much afraid of the doctor, who was also the owner of the hospital, but finally one of them hesitantly called him again and found he had gone back to sleep.

After another fifteen minutes he arrived, very grouchy and surly. Ignoring me, he walked over to Margaret and pushed roughly on her abdomen, and our baby girl popped out—white and silent. The nurses slapped her to try to get her to breathe, but nothing happened. I remember how panicky one of the nurses was.

“Get the oxygen! Get the oxygen!” she exclaimed.

“Fool!” the doctor snarled. “If it isn’t breathing, what good would oxygen do?”

At this point I went into a side room and got down on my knees and prayed, “Lord, if this child is ever going to need You in her entire life, it is right now. Please let her live. Still, Lord, if for some reason—perhaps because of something in her life You don’t want her to have to face, or if perhaps she would not receive the grace of Christ or would abandon Him—then Your will be done. It would be better to take her now. But please, Lord, let her live.”

I hurried back to the delivery room, and just then the baby began to breathe and to cry. A few moments later I went back to the little “prayer room” to thank the Lord for His kindness. And so baby Janet came into our lives as a special act of God.

Kenneth Taylor was founder and chairman of the board for Tyndale House Publishers and is best known for his paraphrase, The Living Bible.
