Chapter 7

The following day was cloudy and cold, and Elizabeth felt irritable with the boredom and frustration of her situation. After a long morning spent above stairs, she longed for a change of scenery and eventually persuaded herself that a little time spent in the library could do no harm.

As she slowly pushed open the door and peered tentatively inside, she was reminded of her first evening at Netherfield and her encounter with Mr Darcy in the billiard room. Her eyes roamed the space and lingered in each chair, but the library was unoccupied; she was not sure whether this pleased or disappointed her.

Choosing a volume of poetry, Elizabeth sunk into an armchair that faced the door, determined not to be caught unawares by any visitors entering the room. She eventually relaxed and became absorbed in the verses, the tediousness of the day melting away with the words and rhythms.

About half an hour later, she was startled by a noise from behind her, and she whirled around to see Mr Darcy stepping through a hidden door in one of the bookshelves. Elizabeth’s brow furrowed slightly as she realised that it could not have been the door to the billiard room that he had used on the first night, as that was on the other side of the room. How many secret doors did this blasted house have?

Determined to ignore the man, she settled back into her chair and stared intently at her book, hoping that he would believe her to be utterly absorbed by the verse. She was aware of Mr Darcy crossing the room and taking a chair facing her own, and she could not resist glancing up to see what he was doing.

He appeared to be quite content, holding a book open in one hand and a glass of amber liquid, that he must have brought in with him, in the other. He seemed to be engrossed in the pages, and so she lowered her gaze again and forced herself to read.

The clock in the corner of the library was starting to irritate her, reminding her with every tick that she had not read a single word since Mr Darcy entered.

She risked letting her eyes flick upwards once more. He was still in the same position, still reading, still seemingly unperturbed by her presence. In the corner of her vision, the library ladder was taunting her. As the memory of what had happened last time she was in that room came flooding back to her, she squirmed involuntarily in her chair, her thighs clenching slightly, eliciting a little frisson of pleasure in her nether regions that she did not wish to end. Burying her head in her book once more, she took a deep breath, hoping that Mr Darcy had not noticed her restlessness. She turned the page and tried again to focus.

How could he just sit there so calmly after what had happened between them? She surreptitiously looked up again. He was in exactly the same position
