Part IV

Outside Intervention

The next ten seconds were chaotic, yet seemed to be in slow motion. My eyes immediately went to the witness stand, where Heinz had spun around and fallen off the back. However, he still looked to be alive. Brian had grabbed Laura and held her tightly against him. As Heinz fell, the gun had slipped from his hand but had landed unfortunately close to Brian. Judge Burke had frozen and remained on the witness stand. I grabbed Stacy and Marcy and sent them running towards the other women at the table. Heather and Monica Stone both fell to the ground onto their sides. Unfortunately, he had hogtied Heather to the jury box, and she was unable to get away. Monica was able to inchworm her way over towards the other women, who untied her. Matt was caught in no man’s land by himself on the other side of the room. Like Judge Burke, he froze the moment the sniper’s shot rang out.

People were screaming and moving around without any real purpose. I looked. All the doors were still secured, and we were trapped with these two killers.

Brian yelled to the group, “Stop it! Sit down and calm down, right now!”

There really was no place to hide, and I expected Brian either to push the button on his vest or just start killing us one at a time. Surprisingly, he was more concerned with his friend than he was with any of us. In my mind I thought of using one of the dead as a shield, if needed, but Brian wasn’t shooting just yet. Brian held Laura tightly against his body as protection while he moved around to check on his fallen friend, even closer.

Get out of there, Judge!

The judge pulled up his pants, but that was about it. He stayed on the stand!

“Heinz is still alive!” Brian shouted. “But he needs some help! Judge, give me your shirt!”

Either Judge Burke was not paying attention, or his response skills needed some help, because he stood there like a stooge doing nothing.

“Goddamn it!” Brian yelled. “Strip off that fucking shirt. I need to stop the blood!”

If there were a way out, now would be the perfect time, but unfortunately there wasn’t anywhere to hide. We were just lucky that he was absorbed with helping his friend. I could hear a helicopter circling the building once things settled down slightly. I also noticed a light shining through the upper windows.

It was strange. Between that chopper, the screams, and the wounded, I felt like I was back in Iraq. While Brian tended to Heinz, I slipped unnoticed to Marcy and quickly untied her. Heinz had done a great job restraining her, but with my adrenaline working and my mind thinking clearly, even under the stress, I released her in no time. She wanted to hug and thank me, but there was no time for that. I pushed her quickly over to where the other women had been seated. They had left
