Chapter 12
A month went by with Brenda and Gadget seeing very little of each other. Brenda had her new lab at Scolex Industries where she had unlimited funding and complete control over her research. Gadget, on the other hand, was the novelty of the Riverton Police Department. Before long, he had saved a drowning child with silly string, rescued dozens of pets with his telescopic limbsâeverything but solve the mystery of Artemus Bradfordâs death. Gadget became so discouraged, he was ready to give up.
âI know I could help those guys with the Bradford investigation,â he told Penny as he opened a can of tuna with his finger can opener. They were making sandwiches in his kitchen.
Penny placed four slices of bread on the counter in front of them as Gadget cut a piece of American cheese onto each with his finger saw.
âItâs just that Chief Quimbyââ Gadget stuck his hand into the bowl of tuna salad Penny handed him and activated his power mixer. âHe says the Bradford case is real police work,â Gadget continued, raising his voice above the loud motor of the mixer, âand that Iâm not a real policeman.â
He scooped some tuna out of the bowl and dumped a large glob onto each of the sandwiches.
âMaybe heâs right. Maybe I am just a publicity stunt.â
This made Gadget suddenly sad, and he didnât feel like talking about it anymore. âTuna melt?â he offered, changing the subject. Penny nodded.
He held the sandwich up and with the thumb torch from his other hand, heated it to a golden brown.
âI can totally relate,â Penny said after a momentâs thought. âLike yesterday, I wanted to try out for the intramural soccer team and my teacher said I wasnât good enough. So Iâm not even gonna try.â
âWhat!â Gadget said, his mouth full of tuna. âDonât take no for an answer! Go back and demand the chance to show what you can do!â
Penny smiled. âAfter you,â she said wisely.
âGood one,â Gadget said.
Gadget went to Chief Quimby the very next day and demanded that he be put on the Artemus Bradford case.
âWhatâs your problem, Gadget?â the chief said. âEvery time you flick your Bic you make headlines. Be happy with that.â
Gadget continued to protest, but the chief was adamant.
âGet out of my office,â Quimby roared. âCanât you see Iâm busy?â
Defeated, Gadget walked down the hall of the police station, his head low. He passed a poster with his picture and the heading iâm on the case! What case? he wondered.
Someone tapped him on the shoulder. âHey, Gadget. I need some help!â It was one of the other officers.
âReally?â Gadget asked enthusiastically. âA new partner? Backup?â
âActually,â the cop said, âI was wondering if you could nuke my burrito? Microwaveâs on the fritz.â
Gadgetâs hopes were dashed, but without complaint he activated the heating rod from his finger and stuck it into the burrito. Within seconds it was piping hot and ready to be eaten.
âThisâll be perfect for the stakeout,â the officer said. âThanks, Gadget.â
âStakeout?â Gadget wondered aloud. âSounds exciting.
