We now partition B as

where B11 and B21 have two rows each. Hence B12 and B22 have also two rows each. This forces B11 and B21 to have two columns each while B12 and B22 have each one column. This gives

and we find that the matrix on the right, on simplification, does indeed yield the product AB.

Note that it is not enough if we simply partition the matrices A and B. What is important is that the partitioned matrices should be conformable for multiplication. This means, in the above example, that the 8 products A11B11, A12B21, …A22B22 are all defined.
